Collections and Shelf Tags
How products end up in the right places on the website. Collections fill themselves from product type, vendor and shelf tag — nothing is added by hand.
What actually decides where a product appears

Most products need all three. A cast-iron pan is product type Cookware, vendor JS Gourmet, and carries the tag shelf:cast-iron-cookware — which is what puts it on the Cast Iron Cookware page, and on the Cookware & Bakeware page above it.
How to apply a shelf tag

Look the category up in the registry. Copy the tag exactly as written, including the shelf: prefix and the hyphens.
The tag exists in the registry
- Add it in the Tags fieldProduct page → Tags
Type or paste the tag and press Enter. Shopify will suggest existing tags as you type — take the suggestion rather than typing it out, which avoids typos.
The tag appears as a chip in the Tags field
- Set the product type as wellProduct page → Product type
The shelf tag fills the sub-collection; the product type fills the department above it. Both are needed.

Open the collection page and look for the product. Collections update shortly after a change rather than instantly, so allow a few minutes.

The brand pages and what fills them
Brand pages are driven entirely by the Vendor field. Setting the vendor is the only step — there is no separate brand tag.

The remaining department collections combine product types with shelf tags. Their behaviour is the same from the product's side: set the type and the tag correctly and the product lands where it should.

The authoritative list. The left column is what goes in the Tags field, character for character. “Rolls up into” is the department page the product also reaches by carrying that tag.
