Things to Never Do

The short list of actions that cause damage which is hard or impossible to undo. Read this one first.

Cannot be undone

NeverInsteadSee
Delete a productArchive it. The record and its web address survive.JES-PRD-01
Delete a collectionAsk RevShift to unpublish it.JES-COL-01
Change a product's web address (handle)Ask RevShift. A redirect has to go in first or every existing link breaks.JES-BULK-01
Use the automatic translation button in Translate & AdaptTranslate field by field. The automatic pass overwrites the whole store at once and cannot be undone.JES-FR-01
Delete a file from the Files area to remove one product's imageRemove the image from that product's Media area. Deleting the file breaks it on every product using it.JES-IMG-01
Run a Matrixify import without saving an untouched copy of the exportSave the copy first. It is the only way back — Matrixify has no undo.JES-BULK-01

No error message, wrong result

NeverInsteadSee
Build a Matrixify import file from scratchStart from an export. Unrecognised column names are ignored without any warning.JES-BULK-01
Import a Tags column containing only the tags you are addingExport the existing tags and edit the full list. Tags replace rather than merge.JES-BULK-01
Type a shelf tag by handTake Shopify's autocomplete suggestion. A typo creates a tag that matches nothing and the product appears nowhere.JES-COL-01
Invent a tag, a field or a product typeAsk RevShift. A value with nothing behind it does nothing at all.JES-COL-01
Assume a product is live because it is ActiveConfirm Online Store is ticked as well. Active alone shows nothing.JES-PRD-01
Trust the admin instead of the websiteOpen the live page. The admin holding the right value does not prove the page shows it.JES-BULK-01

Reversible, but wrong

Add, remove, hide or reorder a section in the theme editorAsk RevShift.JES-THM-01
Edit theme code, colours, fonts or spacingAsk RevShift.JES-THM-01
Work in the theme editor while someone else is in itCoordinate first. Two people saving can overwrite each other.JES-THM-01
Change only the desktop image on a bannerChange the mobile image too. It is a separate setting.JES-THM-01
Fill in only part of the Product Story blockAll three fields or none. A partial fill renders as a half-built block.JES-PRD-02
Write titles or field values in capitalsSentence case throughout.JES-PRD-02

Damages the business, not the site

NeverInsteadSee
Put MSRP or any pricing on a page, a template or an exportThe MSRP field is confidential by design. Nothing on the site reads it, and that is deliberate.JES-PRD-02
Use the word “Shop”, or any wording that promises a purchase“Browse”. This site has no cart and no checkout.JES-FR-01
Publish a product with no French copyLeave it as a Draft until the French exists.JES-FR-01
Publish a product with no imageLeave it as a Draft until photography arrives.JES-IMG-01
Archive a product that is being replaced without saying soTell RevShift first, so the old address points at the replacement.JES-PRD-01

What to do next

  1. Stop. Do not attempt to fix it with a second bulk action.
  2. Write down exactly what was done, and when.
  3. If it was a Matrixify import, download the results file — it lists every row and its outcome.
  4. Send that to RevShift with the SKUs affected.
  5. Do not delete anything else in the meantime.

Almost everything on this list can be mitigated if it is caught early. The damage that cannot be repaired is usually the damage nobody reported.
